Around the 4000 islands on the Mekong
Don Khong our base for the past days, an island on the river Mekong, is 18 km long and 8 km wide (depending on the water level of the river).
Time in general passes slowly in this part of the world, and doesn't even seem to matter. People put much more emphasis on values as family, politeness and hospitability.
While touring the island by bike, we were lucky enough to encounter for ourselves the friendliness of a local family.
We also did a one day boat trip to see more of the area of the 4000 islands. In fact, a lot of these islands are just "inhabited" by flora and fauna. Nevertheless around 100 villages are situated on the Mekong islands.
There are still signs of the French reign on the island of Don Det and Don Khon - a rusty old locomotive which was used on the only ever railway in Laos.
